March 27, 1970
Mariah
was born and raised in Long Island, NY. Sometimes Mariah experienced
discrimination as she was growing up, because of her Irish/African-American/Venezuelan
descent. On the day following her graduation from high school, Mariah
moved to New York City to persue her music career.
Mariah's music break came when she was hired to be a back upvocalist
for dance-pop singer Brenda K. Starr. Brenda shared Carey's demo tape
with the head of Columbia Records,Tommy Mottola. After signing a contract
with Columbia in 1990, Mariah recorded her first album. She became
an overnight success and won the 1990 Grammy awards for Best New Artist
and Best Female Vocalist. Mariah topped the charts every year from
1990 to 1999.
Mariah's
skyrocketing career took an emotional and physical toll on her. She
took a brief break from the music world in 2002, but is currently
staging a comeback with her new album The Emancipation of Mimi.
