Mexian
American Richard E. Cavazos was born and raised in Kingsville, TX.
Richard was active in the ROTC program while he attended Texas Technological
University. After graduating from college, Cavazos became a lieutenant
with the 65th Infantry Regiment during the Korean War. The 65th, was
a minority unit comprised mostly of soldiers from Puerto Rico. Even
though Cavazos' regiment fought courageously and earned praise from
General MacArthur, there were times that men in the regiment experienced
racism and segregation when they were not in battle.
Richard
overcame the prejudice he experienced during the Korean War and went
on to become one of the most respected generals—Hispanic or
otherwise—in the military. Cavazos won many honors and high
praise from famed military men like General Colin Powell and General
H. Norman Schwarzkopf.
