Born:
1959
Evelyn
was a shy girl as she grew up in Huntington Beach, California. Her
grandparents were migrant workers from Mexico and her parents were
active in the Hispanic community. Evelyn's mother thought dancing
lessons might help Evelyn overcome her shyness, so she enrolled Evelyn
in a ballet class.
Evelyn loved, dancing, school and sports. Eventually she gave up sports
so she could devote all her efforts to her dancing. She said, "There
is this fire inside my heart that burned with the desire — the
need — to dance." At the age of 15 she became a dancing apprentice.
Evelyn's talent was nurtured by the San Francisco Ballet company as
she became the first Hispanic American prima ballerina in the United
States.
